Maryville Wins Fifth Place
BY WAYNE PHILLIPS SPORTS EDITOR
Maryville's Miranda Maples
hit four free throws in the final 17 seconds to secure a 40-35 win over Cleveland and fifth place in
this year's Ladies' Classic for the Lady Rebels.
The entire contest was close with Maryville
(11-2) holding a 21-17 halftime lead before Cleveland (14-3) rallied to push ahead 26-25 heading into
the fourth. Neither side gave an inch over the final eight minutes, but it was the Lady Rebs' strong
effort in the closing seconds that sealed the win.
Cleveland's Q'Schra Brown was the only
player in the game with double figures, scoring 10. She had a double-double, adding 10
rebounds.
Maryville was paced by nine points from Rebekah Singleton. Maples and Alex
Breazeale scored seven each.
Neither team shot the ball well. Maryville hit 36.4 percent
(12-of-33)while Cleveland hit 30.8 percent (12-of-39). The key difference was the Lady Rebels scored
five more points - the margin of victory - off Cleveland turnovers than the Lady Raiders did off
Maryville mistakes.
