Cocke County made one of the most amazing turnarounds in
Ladies’ Classic history, rallying from 19 down in the third quarter to beat Shelbyville Central 57-54
in the seventh place game.
The Eaglettes (9-6) seemed to have the game well in hand, leading
34-17 at the break and adding to that right at the start of the third. But then Cocke
County(14-3) found its footing and went on a tear.
Morgan Buda, playing much of the
game in foul trouble, and Shannon Depew led the Lady Rebs’ improbable comeback with 14 points each.
Depew just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
After the big deficit, Courtney Lewis
made Cocke County’s turnaround complete, tying the game at 42 with a pair of free throws with
5:58left in the fourth. A minute later, Depew gave the Lady Red the lead from the stripe, and the
game went almost bucket for bucket the rest of the way.
The score was tied seven times and the
lead changed hands twice.
The big difference was shooting in the second half where the Lady
Red hit 55 percent of their shots while Shelbyville slipped to only 27percent
shooting.
Shelbyville was led by 19 points from Janie Graves and Hannah Dawson with 16 before
she fouled out with six minutes remaining in the contest.
