North Greene lost a thriller, 51-48, to Providence Day School of North Carolina Wednesday night in the Ladies' Classic, but Coach James Buchanan saw a lot of things that pleased him in the way his young squad scrapped and fought until the end.

"We were down 10 points in the fourth quarter and if you would have told me we would have a chance to tie with the last shot, well ..." Buchanan smiled. "We're very young with two freshmen and two sophomores playing a lot. I think this was a game they can really learn a lot from. They exposed us in places, and if you make mistakes against the kind of competition you see in this tournament, it costs you. The girls saw that."

The Huskies didn't score a point in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, and Providence, coached by former Tusculum College assistant Josh Springer, went from two up, 38-36, to 10 up, 46-36.

But North Greene kept battling and got back in it as the Chargers made some turnovers and took some ill-advised shots which allowed the Huskies to creep closer.

Providence was up 51-44 with 32 seconds to play, but Haleigh Bernard made two free throws, then the Huskies got a steal on the inbounds and Emily Britton turned it into a  layup to cut the gap to 51-48 with 16 seconds to go.

The Chargers turned it over with six seconds to go, giving  the Huskies a chance for a trey to tie, but they couldn't get off a decent attempt as the clock expired.

The game was close from start to finish, with the Huskies up by one at the close of one and the Chargers up by a point at the half.

Providence (7-6) was led by Morgan Kelson with 13 points while MiLeia Owens added 10.

North Greene (10-3) was paced by Breezy Savage with 13 and Bernard with nine. Charlotte Roschkowski had eight points and hauled in a dozen rebounds.
