Greeneville's Lady Greene Devils picked up only their second win of the
year, but it was a dandy in a 62-59 overtime victory over South Forsyth (Ga.) Thursday
afternoon.
The game was a back-and-forth affair from the
start, but it took a good rally in the fourth quarter by the Devils to even get the game to an
extra period. The Lady Eagles were up 45-38 with less than four minutes left on the clock, but the
Devils charged back to get even at 47-47 with a minute to go.
Forsyth got a free throw from Ryane Williams followed by a bucket from Sara Idris to go
up 50-47 with 35 seconds to go. But Greeneville's Leah Fillers threaded in a 3-pointer from the
corner with 25 seconds left to knot it at 50. The Eagles had three shots to win it in regulation
but all were contested and failed to connect.
In
overtime, the Eagles went up 57-53 with less than two minutes left, but again GHS came back with
Alana Collins providing the fireworks with back-to-back buckets. South Forsyth missed the front
end of a one-plus free throw with 42 seconds left and Sydni Lollar boosted the Devils into a 60-59
lead by making two foul shots with 22 seconds left.
The
Eagles then made a turnover on their way into front court, and Collins converted two foul shots
with five seconds left. A last second 3-point attempt to tie it at the buzzer failed by the
Eagles.
Lollar had 16 points, five rebounds and seven
steals to lead Greeneville (2-7). Leah Fillers scored 15. Ashlyn White had nine points and eight
rebounds, and Shevon Weems also came off the bench to score nine.
South Forsyth (7-6) got a huge effort from Zoe Maisel with 18 points and 16 rebounds.
Williams scored 13, Idris had 12 and Ashley Briendl added 10. The Eagles had 11 blocked shots in
the game. The Greene Devils had 13 steals.
